Hurricane Irene Hype: How the Media Went Overboard

leave a comment »

Someone has to say it: cable news was utterly swept away by the notion that Irene would turn out to be Armageddon. National news organizations morphed into local eyewitness-news operations, going wall to wall for days with dire warnings about what would turn out to be a Category 1 hurricane, the lowest possible ranking. “Cable news is scaring the crap out of me, and I WORK in cable news,” Bloomberg correspondent Lizzie O’Leary tweeted.

MLK Memorial Outsourced To China

leave a comment »

The new monument honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. was—literally—made in China.

The Telegraph reports:

There has been controversy over the choice of Lei Yixin, a 57-year-old master sculptor from Changsha in Hunan province, to carry out the work…

Mr Lei, who has in the past carved two statues of Mao Tse-tung, one of which stands in the former garden of Mao Anqing, the Chinese leader’s son, carried out almost all of the work in Changsha…

It is unclear how much money was saved by making it in China.

Thomas Friedman was unavailable for comment.

GM Denies Warranty Claims: “Thanks For The Bailout, Suckers!”

leave a comment »

After taking 50 billion dollars in federal bailout money and filing for bankruptcy, General Motors is feeling like a whole new company these days.

In fact, the New GM claims that they are a different company, and refuses to honor the warranty of the Old GM.

Reuters reports:

General Motors Co (GM.N) is seeking to dismiss a lawsuit over a suspension problem on more than 400,000 Chevrolet Impalas from the 2007 and 2008 model years, saying it should not be responsible for repairs because the flaw predated its bankruptcy…

But in a recent filing with the U.S. District Court in Detroit, GM noted that the cars were made by its predecessor General Motors Corp, now called Motors Liquidation Co or “Old GM,” before its 2009 bankruptcy and federal bailout.

The heartbreak of America: That’s today’s Chevrolet.

Dogs Can Smell Lung Cancer

leave a comment »

A new study by German researchers apparently shows that “sniffer dogs” can reliably smell lung cancer on the breath of patients. The finding could significantly improve early detection methods of the disease, which is the deadliest form of cancer worldwide.

If Rick Perry Were A Democrat…

leave a comment »

Over at Freakonomics, Stephen Dubner asks the question:

Is there any question that if Governor Rick Perry of Texas were a Democrat that all the left-leaning editorialists, economists, bloggers, etc., would be bending over backward to praise the Texas employment picture rather than bending over backward to belittle it?

Of course not.

On the other hand, if Rick Perry were a Democrat, Texas’ employment picture wouldn’t be worthy of praise.
